Is your other half’s snoring keeping you awake at night?

Or perhaps it’s you who’s guilty of plaguing the bedroom with your ‘barnyard noises’. Regardless, snoring can be a real nightmare to deal with.

But fear not, Dr Karan Rajan, an NHS surgeon and lecturer at Sunderland University, has a quirky mouth workout that he claims could kick your snoring to the curb – even if it looks a bit daft.

“If you want to stop snoring, try these anti-snoring exercises to have a better night’s sleep,” he said in a TikTok video (@dr.karanr). “…These exercises are basically resistance training for your tongue and throat muscles to tone them up so they don’t flap around or collapse when you sleep. So, you wake up feeling fresher and stops your partner giving you a sleep divorce.”

According to the NHS, snoring is very common and it’s usually not a sign of anything worrisome. It’s often triggered by your mouth falling open while you’re asleep, your tongue partially blocking the back of your throat, or a blocked nose.

However, if your snoring is more than just a minor nuisance, there are various solutions you can try. As part of Dr Raj’s mouth exercises, he first suggests sticking your tongue out and holding it for five seconds. For extra resistance, press your tongue against a spoon and repeat three or four times.

Next, tuck your tongue back in and place two fingers on each cheek. Push your tongue from side to side against your fingers, again repeating the action three or four times.

Dr Raj continued: “[Next] push against your front teeth and try to swallow. If you want even more stretch in your throat muscles, look up while you do it. Repeat three or four times.
